LANSING (AP) -- A state audit says Michigan didn't complete about 10 percent of routine bridge inspections on time between 2006 and 2008.

There are more than 10,000 state-owned and locally owned bridges that must be inspected at least every two years.

The audit released Friday also says 59 percent of underwater bridge inspections either weren't done or weren't done on time.

Auditors lay the blame on local bridge owners and the Michigan Department of Transportation.

State officials says they agree with the audit's recommendations. Auditors especially worry that critical inspections weren't done to check for erosion near bridges going over water. The erosion of the streambed or bank around bridge piers is the most common cause of bridge failure and closure.

..start demanding that our state agencies use OUR tax money in a responsible manner? Look back over the summer at Mdot's "projects". Look at just the fact finders readers have sent in with concerns with Mdot road projects. Road work done late or as in the case of US 31 with "Tacky Bumps". The road sign replacement of thousand of still good signs and addition of much more. Road work being done that sure you can say looks nice but at what cost? (the 131 highway field stone faced overpasses) Their fleets of new vehicles John Deere Tractors, ect. How about all the money that Mdot gets when jobs are not done on time? What do they do with that? I would think that the store owners that suffer more should get that. Yes we need to keep our roads in good condition but we also need to stop and think where will the money come from. So here we are "The Mighty Mac" not inspected as required but we have new shiny road signs. Just watch.. Going to have to raise gas taxes..
