SAULT STE. MARIE (AP) -- A committee at Lake Superior State University says it will start interviewing candidates for a president to replace Rodney L. Lowman.

Retired Sault Ste. Marie schools Superintendent Tony McLain has been interim president of the 3,000-student university since Lowman's May resignation.

A search committee said Wednesday it's considered more than 70 candidates and continues to work with interest groups to find more potential candidates.

The committee decided Oct. 29 to start initial interviews with candidates of interest.

Lowman was vice president for academic affairs at California's multi-campus Alliant International University when he was picked to succeed Betty J. Youngblood as Lake Superior's president in 2007.
