State wildlife officials say they've confirmed cougars are in Michigan's Easter Upper Peninsula.

The Department of Natural Resources announced Wednesday it has verified two sets of cougar tracks and confirmed the location of a cougar photo.  The tracks were discovered in the DeTour and Gulliver areas, while the picture was taken near Bruce Township.

Wildlife biologist Kristie Sitar says this is the first time a cougar's presence in the eastern U.P. has been confirmed, There have been several other reports of cougar sightings, but the department hasn't been able to verify them.

The last known wild cougar taken in Michigan was killed near Newberry in 1906.  Sightings, however, are regularly reported and although verification is difficult, the DNR was able to verify several sets of cougar tracks in Marquette and Delta counties in 2008.

Cougar tracks are about three inches long by three and a half inches wide.  They typically show no claw marks.

Reports of cougar tracks and other evidence should be made to a local DNR office or by calling the department's 24 hour Report All Poaching line at 1-800-292-7800.

Cougar killed in Grayling area.....WOW Mark Bailey who owns the Grocery store in Grayling, Michigan !

Cougar shot on 9/10/09 about 55 miles NE of Cadillac
Great pictures and the DNR came to confim as well.

This cougar was killed near Grayling, confirming the presence of cougar
again in Michigan .

This is Mark Bailey who owns the Grocery store in Grayling, Mi. He heard his dogs barking and went out to check it out. They had the lion in the tree. When the lion saw Mark, he jumped out of the tree and came towards him. His dogs attacked the lion in the side which gave Mark enough time to pull his hand gun out and shoot the lion 9 times. It did not kill him but disabled him. He called the DNR who finished him off. If it weren't for Mark's dog, he would have been attacked. Cliff Wheeler took the pictures here to also confirm the kill .

This is gun safety! Be safe, keep a legal gun handy.

I had what was a Mt. Lion/Cougar run out at me while I was driving. This was back in 2007. This was on M-75 North between Boyne City and Walloon Lake at about 2am. I had slowed down enough, to see it with it's back arched and teeth showing. It was amazing for sure!

About time

I almost hit a Cougar near Lake Ann. I reported it to the DNR and they told me that it was a dog or something. NO, Sorry, it was a cougar. I know what they look like. I don't know why DNR won't just say they exist around here.

Oh well.

I guess if I had hit it, they would tell me it's a house cat?

Waiting for the anti-cougar in Michigan crowd to chime in on this little nugget. Of course, any resonable person with an understanding of wildlife already knew this! I'm glad our tax dollars finally figured out this no brainer.
