TRAVERSE CITY -- For Molly Gallagher taking her two sons trick or treating is a family tradition and one that involves safety.

"Either myself or my husband will be with them.  So, there's always an adult with them close by," says Gallagher.

Besides the typical precautions like looking out for traffic and staying close to mom and dad...it's sometimes dangers that could be right in your neighborhood that parents need to be aware of.  7&4 News went on the Michigan State Police registered sex offenders website.  In just Grand Traverse County alone, there are almost 300.

"I haven't actually looked up online...it does make me nervous they're so close by," says Gallagher.

For Maggie Kent who runs a daycare from her Traverse City home, this public information is something she's aware of.

"I've been online, I know whose in my neighborhood.  I know where to stay away from.  My husband and I take turns, someone stays here and passes out candy, the other one takes the kids around. We don't let them out of our site," says Kent.

According to the state police here in Traverse City, registered sex offenders can pass out candy on Halloween, as long as there isn't a stipulation in their conviction to be around children.

"That makes me nervous.  I don't like that.  I don't like the fact that they could pass out candy to children and be in that close of contact," says Gallagher.

Although there is no state law preventing sex offenders from passing out Halloween candy, the state attorney general's office says most judges rule that sex offenders have zero contact with children.

My comment was for John Doe, but I love your passion. Next time, save it for the victims of Anthony Sowell in Cleveland.

You are part of the problem

No I am not the poor sap turned in for doing my girlfriend. I am a college educated 35 year old female (married for many years) that has never once had a problem with the law in any way. I just read... read the laws behind the issues. Read the entire articles, read the statues, I choose to become informed on issues not part of the problem. Mr. DITKAS MUSTACHE, please read about the issues before you put labels on others. I could sit here a type out a few dozen labels for you but I won't because I don't know you. I won't label you also because that would make me part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Let me guess, your the poor sap who the girls Father turned you into the cops. You probably got a bad rap but, you should have been smarter than that. As for the rest of the deviates on the regisry, I hope you suffer. You don't offer any stats on your claim. A Leopard doesn't change it's spots!

Sex offenders-

Posted by Sally Confused, Northern Michigan - Sunday, November 01, 2009 at 9:18 p.m.

The sex offender list is just that a list. It is a list of every crime listed under the 4 "levels" of sex crimes. Even someone who was relieving themselves in public but only seen by an officer can be on this list. Two adults have concentual sex parking on lovers lane could be on this list. A 17 year old kid could be on this list for having sex with their 16 year old boy/girlfriend. Just because a person is on this list doesn't mean that is was with a child or even forced. Please, please, look up the crime the person pled to or was found guilty of before casting your judgement on them. These men and women sometimes just had one bad judgement call and have paid their dues; just to be labeled child molesters when that was not what happened or even remotely close to the truth.

Definition Please

Ok - let's stop with the Sex Offender term - first of all someone who is a registered sex offender could be on that list because they urinated in public or maybe they had consensual sex in a public place (thier own car). While I agree we should be very careful, I believe we need to stop allowing the media to put the fear of god in us and become educated. I believe the reality is that true Sex Offenders only make up like 1% of the total population...Check the records to be sure, but needless to say - Educate yourself before you grab your torch and pitchfork.

Silly

The mass hysteria over sex offenders is silly--there has never been any epidemic of child abductions at Halloween. Most incidents involving child sex offenses involve someone the child already knows! Unsafe drivers or the flu are statistically a lot more dangerous to your kids than people on the offender registry!

really?

are you kidding? people take more precautions than ever now! anyone else remember when you and your friends or sibling(s) went trick or treating BY YOURSELVES until 10 at night? and nothing ever happened.... just like the media to scare the crap out of everyone some more. for god sakes kids dont even trick or treat when its dark out anymore... its ridiculous.

No Lynching

Posted by John Doe, Marquette - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 5:24 p.m.

What? No lynch mobs? I am surprised that local police haven't done their yearly round-up of sex offenders, even though sex offenders are among the least likely to repeat.

Bank robbers, murderers, car thieves, and other criminals don't get the same post-incarceration treatment that sex offenders do. People who hold up banks get off easier than sex offenders.

Begs an enevitable question

Just in theory:

What if I served a sex offender five Long Island Ice teas and then kicked him out right when the trick or treating started?

Is that legal?
