Like many health departments across the country, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan has not received all of its H1N1 vaccine shipments, forcing officials to change their strategy to get the public vaccinated as quickly as possible.
Right now, 19 vaccination clinics are planned for the week of November 2, for the groups of people in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control vaccine priority list.
The vaccination clinics initially planned during the school day in middle and high schools around Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego counties are cancelled at this time.
The health department will be offering Swine Flu vaccine for free to the CDC's priority groups. Officials expect long lines, as vaccination is on a first come/first serve basis. Children and adolescents age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
The priority groups are: Pregnant women, Anyone who lives with or cares for an infant six months or younger, health care workers and emergency medical personnel, children and adolescents age six months through 24 years, adults 24 to 64 with underlying health conditions (asthma, heart disease, diabetes, neurological disorders, cancer, immune system disorders)
