VANDERBILT -- Investigators are in route to the site of an early evening plane crash in Otsego County.

The Aeronca brand aircraft crashed around 6:30 p.m. on the shoulder of the southbound lane of I-75 just south of Vanderbilt.

Two men onboard the single engine aircraft had to be extracted by rescuers. Both men, a 52-year-old from Gaylord and a 32-year-old from Gaylord, were transported to Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord where they later died.

The first two people on the scene happened to be two off duty Michigan State Police troopers who helped get the men out of the plane. Witnesses say the plane had been circling at a low height above the interstate before the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have both been contacted and will investigate.

I-75 was re-opened to traffic at 10 p.m. Stay tuned to 7 & 4 News for any updates.

I was northbound right next to the plane when it went down. I slammed on my brakes and pulled over. I just started running. I was the first one to get there. Seconds later the two state troopers and a man in a green coat were there too. I saw fuel leaking and my only thought was to get ready to get him out. I went to the other side of the plane and un buckled his seatbelt. I didn't want to move him unless I had to so I just held him and waited. I held him. I couldn't do much but I held him and I told him I wouldn't leave. I didn't know him and I didn't know the pilot but I held him because I couldn't do anything else. May God be with him and the pilot and their families! I'm so sad for all of you...

Just got a call from the scene, they are being told it was a private plane, two on board, and they radioed for help ahead of time because the pilot knew they were in trouble.

We were driving home on US-27 and my daughter said, "Mommy, I think that plane just crashed!" She told me it was circling over and over and then it took a nose dive. Very scary! Not sure how many people were on board, or the extent of the injuries. Ambulance took 20 minutes to return with sirens on. Thank you to all of the drivers on I-75 both Northbound and south bound who stopped to assist!
