LANSING (AP) -- The State Board of Education is meeting to talk about funding as school districts face cuts of nearly $300 or more per student.
The board was to meet on Nov. 10, but moved up the meeting after Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a public schools budget last Monday that contained a cut of $165 per student for all schools and slashed $51 million in extra funds for 39 districts.
Granholm ordered another $127-per-student cut on Thursday because of falling revenue.
Senate Republicans say the moves are intended to force tax increases, and the second cut should wait until the next revenue estimating conference in January.
But Granholm says revenues continue to decline and action is needed now to avoid an even bigger cut in January.
