GRAND RAPIDS (AP) -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm has traveled to west Michigan to ask school officials to help convince lawmakers to raise more money for education.

The Democratic governor stopped in Muskegon and Grand Rapids on Friday, one day after ordering a $127 per student cut to funding that will take effect later this year unless revenue is found to avoid it.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop has sent letters to some superintendents saying the governor is misrepresenting the budget situation. He says it's part of an attempt to coerce the Legislature into raising taxes.

Granholm earlier this week signed the equivalent of a $165 per student cut into state law. The $127 per student reduction - about $212 million statewide - would come on top of that. Some wealthier districts face steeper cuts.

cuts hurt our children

Posted by Keri Gardner, Lansing - Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 8:57 a.m.

Every time there is a budget issue they cut our children's education. First the promise scholarship now the K-12 budget. How many cuts can public schools take before they fall apart and the children who can't afford a private education will suffer. Educated young adults are leaving our state in droves and our state will not grow economically because of this.

Fed UP!

I am so sick and tired of Granholm's black mailing tactics in order to get her way and at the children's expense! Michigan needs to vote a governor into office who actually CARES about our children's education! Granholm is pulling these stunts in order to make the Republican majority look bad in hopes of winning over undecided votes for the next presidential election! She is a pathetic excuse for a governor and Michigan has been going under ever since SHE took office! It is time Michigan starts fighting back and we all need to write to our congressman and senators and let them know we have had enough! STOP taking money from our children's education!
