BIG RAPIDS --

A Ferris State University student is dead after he was hit by a car in Big Rapids.

It happened around 8:00 a.m. Friday on State Street near Ferris Drive.

Deputies say a vehicle was Northbound on State St. in the outside lane and a pedestrian, 18 year old Fumitoshi Yonemura of Novi, was crossing at the intersection of Ferris Drive.  Statements from witnesses indicates that the traffic light was green on State Street, which would have the pedestrian crossing signal solid red. Statements also indicate that there was traffic in the inside lane, which would have obstructed vision of the driver and pedestrian from seeing each other.

FSU has made counseling support available to faculty, staff and students.

Police are still investigating the crash.
