Native American culture is taking center stage at Michigan Technological University with the school's 14th annual Speakers' Forum and the Spirit of the Harvest Powwow.

HOUGHTON -- Native American culture is taking center stage at Michigan Technological University with the school's 14th annual Speakers' Forum and the Spirit of the Harvest Powwow.

The Speakers' Forum was to start at 10 a.m. Friday at the Upper Peninsula school with a talk by Jessica Koski, a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

The Michigan Tech graduate is a master's degree student at Yale University and was to discuss her experience as a Native American college student.

Navajo hoop dancer Lowery Begay was to perform at 11 a.m., and Canadian country singer Crystal Shawanda was scheduled to talk at 1 p.m. She's a member of the Ojibwe band.

Saturday's events include the powwow from noon-6 p.m. and Shawanda's concert at 7:30 p.m.
