Michigan has the highest unemployment in the nation and more and more people are turning to unemployment benefits to make ends meet. But with no major change in the economy on the horizon, many of those people are hoping those benefits can last a little longer.
A viewer called me asking about a possible extension.
What I found for him is the subject of this Fact Finder Report.
It's been a tough year for Steve Konsella. He lost his job, then he lost his house.
When the housing bubble burst, the need for concrete workers dropped like a rock.
"I've been out of work for a year and haven't been able to get any work, no factory work, nothing you know."
And he's not alone.
I'm very hard looking for work. Still can't find any. There's a lot of my buddies and friends in the same work and they haven't been able to find nothing either.
And while things have been tough, with help from his twice monthly unemployment checks he has been stretching to make ends meet.
"One check pays the rent the other pays the electric."
Because Michigan has such high unemployment, many people have been eligible for up to 79 weeks of benefits.
26 weeks of state benefits
33 weeks of federally funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation
20 weeks of federally funded extended benefits
and an extra $25 a week in federal additional compensation.
As it stands right now the Emergency Unemployment Compensation and the federal additional compensation are set to expire in December.
But Steve heard something that gave him hope, talk of another, a 4th, extension of benefits.
"since I got my last check on my 3rd extension I called like I always do and they hadn't heard nothing about it. So I thought it might take a week so I waited and called in this week and they said they still hadn't heard nothing about it. So that's when I called Fact Finders."
I made some calls and here's what I found out. According to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, yes there is talk of another extension of federal benefits. In late September the U.S. House approved another 13 week extension. The measure now goes to the U.S. Senate. While there is bipartisan support, there is no timetable on when it might be introduced there. But for more than a million people like Steve they hope it's soon.
"I just wondered how long it would take because I don't have very much time to pay my bills."
The Senate has been debating the issue this week, but it's hit a snag over which states should receive the extended benefits. We will of course update you its progress.
Here's something important to keep in mind. The experts say that if you are eligible for these benefits, you do not need to contact anyone; the unemployment insurance agency will contact you.
What do you think about this? What have your experiences been with unemployment?
