IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan National Guard detachment is on a mission to clear land and build a road to a shelter - an animal shelter.
About 50 soldiers from the 1432nd detachment from the western Upper Peninsula communities of Iron River and Kingsford are excavating property near U.S. 41 in Iron Mountain. The land is the future site of the Spring Lake Animal Shelter.
First Lt. Jason Collins tells WLUC-TV for a report Saturday that the project helps the soldiers practice excavation skills as part of their engineering training. He says it helps prepare for state emergencies or other missions.
Shelter volunteers say the planned facility will offer more space than the current shelter, which is filled to capacity. They still need to raise about $500,000 for the $1 million project.
