TRAVERSE CITY -- With the auto industry on the decline in Michigan, the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation are teaming up to diversify the area's manufacturing base.

The "Diversifying Michigan Manufacturers" Summit will be held this Wednesday in Traverse City.

The chamber and the MEDC are bringing together companies to help them break-in to new in-demand markets such as wind energy, aerospace, defense and Homeland Security and medical devices.

"The ultimate goal is jobs, jobs, jobs. It really is. When you take a look at the number of companies even here in Northern Michigan, they may have 75 employees, but they're down to 30 or 40 right now if they're primarily automotive. So the whole goal is to help these companies diversify their efforts, get more out of the automotive industry and get into these targeted growth areas as identified by the state," said Tino Breithaupt, Senior Vice President of Economic Development for the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.

The "Diversifying Michigan Manufacturers Summit" will be held this Wednesday, July 15 at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City.

It begins at 9:00 AM with registration and breakfast.
