Donated items are dropped off at the Women's Resource Center Thrift Shop in Traverse City daily, but its what's being done with some of these items that's helping the local charity continue to operate.
" They're slower all the way around and I think everybody knows that so we just have to find a few more creative ways to get out there and keep the money coming in so we can help the ones that we need to help," said manager Carol Rose.
The thrift shop is hoping to do just that by taking its business online. While majority of items are sold in the store some are ending up on eBay.
" We're having a hard time getting the money that they were actually valued at here in the store so this way we're actually meeting a market that will give us a better price for it. "
Rose says it's items like antiques and collectibles that end up on eBay and not daily items that people need.
" Everyday things that you need in your house... that stuff is still in the store as always. "
The online efforts started two years ago and have recently started to take off. Rose says the thrift shop brings in close to two thousand dollars a month. Every dollar raised from the items sold goes back into the program.
"It just goes right into Helen's House, and Sarah's House, and our transitional houses... it's money that they can use how they need too."
Rose says the extra money helps to make ends meet in emergency situations.
" Sometimes when we can't wait for grants this money goes in and supports that kind of stuff. "
