TRAVERSE AREA -- Hundreds of people in the Traverse City Area are finding alternative ways to get to work this week. Today marks the beginning of smart commute week, an event which was started 15 years ago by TART Trails.
During smart commute week everyone is encouraged to park the car at home and find a different way to get to work, like riding a bike. The idea is to promote healthy living, a healthy environment, and save everybody a little money.
Besides peddling to work, Bob Otwell the Executive Director of TART says there are other ways to join in.
"Some people can't bike but they might be able to carpool, or take the BATA system, or even walk to work," said Otwell.
This year you can also get free breakfast all week for participating. Several restaurants in the Traverse City Area are participating on different days.
