WASHINGTON -- The 82nd Scripps National Spelling Bee is underway in Washington DC.

There is a record 293 spellers competing for more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.

Wednesday's preliminary oral round scores will be combined with results of a written test, taken Tuesday, to determine who will go on to compete in Thursday night's nationally televised championship rounds.

One competitor is from northern Michigan.

Fourteen-year-old Lukas Blakkan-Esser is still in the running.

He is a student at Traverse City West Middle School.
