It looks official with tons of statistics, locations, and numbers. It's pretty easy to believe if it showed up in your email inbox that who ever wrote it is trying to save you from getting a speeding ticket. But it those details that had some of our viewers wondering if it's for real.

The answer to that question is the subject of this Fact Finder.

Lt. Bill Elliot with the Michigan State Police says "I think that is what makes it sound somewhat legitimate."

Oh it does sound real. As in a real warning that you need to keep a close eye on the subject of this email because state troopers are trading in their cruisers for snowplows and are behind the wheel waiting to bust you for speeding.

The warning is coming in the form of an email chocked full of details. Its been making the rounds under the subject line "watch out" and here is why it says you should to do just that.

According to the email, which a ton of viewers have asked us to investigate, MDOT trucks are being driven by troopers. Its says the MDOT truck will drive behind you, pacing you. The email goes on to say the trucks have modified engines that "catapult the truck from snow plow speed to intercept speed in seconds" and before you know it you have been caught speeding!

The email even gives you a detailed list of all the zones these supercharged MDOT trucks will be cruising, just waiting to catch you red handed.

The email that many of you forwarded says its called Operation Yellow Jacket but State Troopers have a even more accurate term for it.

Lt. Elliot says "it's a hoax... this particular traffic initiative does not exist in the state of Michigan."

Yes, its a creative email, someone did their homework with the details and while such an operation exists, Elliot says "operation yellow jacket is taken from a traffic initiative related to construction zones in the state of Pennsylvania."

Its not happening here and as exciting as it may sound, troopers say there are no supercharged MDOT trucks.

Elliot says "our initiatives always include a uniformed officer, there are times when we will use an unmarked or semi marked car to patrol an area or sit on a intersection and have chase cars, but if you have contact with somebody its going to be a uniformed officer here in the state of Michigan."

Lt. Elliot says its not the first hoax he's seen about the state police, but he says this one sends a disturbing message, "The thing that is disappointing about this is that if talks about his being a revenue producing initiative that's the sole purpose to produce revenue that is not the purpose of any of our initiatives they are for safety slow people down or cautious intersections geared towards traffic safety near the more than anything else."

to: check your facts

I never once mentioned or insinuated that the "police" got to keep the money I merely stated these are nothing more than money gaining operations, they have absolutly nothing to do with "safety" they are merely yet one more way "big brother" hassles the citizens of this country with the do as I say! I for one lived thru a headon 55 mph car accident and all Because I was not wearing a seat belt ( before the seat belt law)had I been wearing a seat belt By the officers own admission I would have been most likely cut in half just above the waist, Anyways to show some facts last years "seat belt enforcement area in Cadillac was a Laugh at best I knew several youths who planned that as race day a day where they did all their racing Because no "cops" were in the area,None were ticketed because the police were busy hassleing the true criminals ( non seat belt users)

Anyways maybe that money dont go to the cops ( a very good thing) because if it did and they also got bonuses even more bogus tickets would be issued instead of just the occasional few, personally I think all tickets moneys should go to social services, American Vet organizations, etc and quit letting ,countys, cities, judges etc fatten up vacation accounts. Bet you wouldnt see so many stupid laws getting passed or rediculous check points if they didnt fatten wallets from them....
I would much rather see more drunk driver check points being as I was hit by one head on..those people are a true safety concern to the public,so put your badge away for a few mins and look at the true big picture,

Too bad. . . .

too bad this isn't real I was looking forward to it. there are just too many people now days on the express way that go well over 20 miles over the speed limit and the cops are no where in site of pulling these people over, this has been going on for several years now. The law needs to do their job and ticket these people. Speed limits are set for a reason. its a shame that this was a scam.

Check your facts

Maybe you should check your facts before you spread moree rumors. 1st, when law enforcement does a special enforcement such as a safety belt enforcement zone it's because the State or Feds have given the money for officers to be on overtime (not ignoring the rest of the crime). Monies for these initiatives don't come out of the budgets of local communities. 2nd, when tickets are written, only a few dollars go back to the local police department, if any. Most of it goes to the local communities and courts. And the police departments couldn't make enough off writing tickets to even have their best ticket writer pay for his own salary.

Operation Yellow Jacket

It is always good to check the e-mail information out on www.snopes.com. I did immediately upon receiving a similar e-mail, and found out immediately that it is a hoax that has circulated for a number of years. Michigan is just one of the states mentioned. I am sure that the newsroom staff could check this out as easily as I did.

Nice load

Although i did receieve this e-mail and highly doubted it , I for one second do not buy into the officers story that they do nothing based on monetary gain, why the constant check points for seat belt use? motorcycles do not need seat belts, school buses that carry our yoiuth do not need them that in itsef kind of proves the theory its nothing more than a cash flow device for our state, Kids get thrown worse than anyone, and there is almost nothing on a bus with any kind of padding, So drop the "for our safety" sayings and just admit its what it is a money gaining device.
Of course we could get into the rediculous fines for no proof of insurance, registration etc ( not talking about those that do not have a valid registration or valid insurance) just paper copies with them.
Come on now who do these officers actually think they are kidding 1st graders????
they will use 80% of available man power to set up a check point or two for seat belt use while the rest of a county goes unprotected thats a real crime to public safety not wearing your seat belt...
