Investigators now know what sparked a fire that led to an evacuation in a Clare County community.

An abandoned building in Clare caught fire around 8:30 Wednesday morning. The Clare Fire Chief says workers were cutting metal inside the building and sparks from the metal ignited a fire in the wall. The workers say they tried to get a fire extinguisher but the age of the materials in the wall caused the fire to spread extremely fast. The fire caused an evacuation for one square mile around the building in fear that materials in the building could have been hazardous. A hazmat team investigated the scene and found no evidence of any toxic danger.
