A Grand Traverse County woman is hoping to warn others of a help wanted ad that sounds too good to be true.Instead of offering you a paying job, the company wants your personal information and your money.
"Your looking at classified in your town thinking it's legit," said Carol Howard who responded to the ad.
The newspaper ad offers a babysitting position paying $700 a week, something she says sounded suspicious. "You have to wonder $700 for a babysitting position that does sound like a lot of money," said Howard.
But by calling this number on the ad, you're directed to a website, wonderfulnanny.com, and before you can apply to be a nanny you're asked for your personal information and a credit card payment.
"They're just ripping people off," said Howard, "Whenever you have to pay for an application that to me is just a red flag."
That's when she called us and we called the Better Business Bureau to get to the bottom of it. Turns out the company known as Rodney J Murphy & Associates is actually behind the wonderfulnanny website with a long list of complaints.
In fact when we pulled the report from the Better Business Bureau we found page after page of complaints, but when we tried to contact the company directly we simply got a recording.
So far the company has 97 complaints on file with the Better Business Bureau from 23 different states. Now they are warning to consumers before you do business.
"Based on my experience and the fact the company has not responded to the majority of these complaints and the address is no longer valid I would say this is probably a scam," said Dottie Callina Better Business Bureau representative.
The ad was printed in the Record Eagle classifieds. the paper has since removed the ad.
