Empty sidewalks and empty streets means empty cash registers for downtown Traverse City businesses.
Higher Self Bookstore Owner Carol Schulte says, "I haven't seen anyone walking down the street nobody's called nobody's showed up, but I'm here.”
Both the Higher Self Bookstore and Chocolate Den had yet to see a single customer by early Wednesday afternoon. So instead of ringing in the dough these store owners were catching up on their housekeeping. Unlike people like Daniel Claes whose work takes him outside. Working Tuesday so he can have Wednesday off, Claes spent majority of his morning braving the wind and doing whatever it takes to keep warm.
Daniel Claes says, "I have two pairs of gloves that I keep swapping. I keep them on the defroster to keep them warm. Does it work? Absolutely!"
While Claes layered up to fight off the cold others were keeping warm a more traditional way, by hitting the dance floor.
Beledi Global Dance Center Owner Penny Morris says, "A belly dance class will burn anywhere between 300 -to 500 calories an hour. There's a lot of movement and a lot of body heat its kind of like shimmering instead of shivering!"
One business that seemed to fare well today was the State Theatre. Nearly a hundred students and their parents enjoyed a day off from school, nice and warm in front of the big screen.
