A Northern Michigan family is mourning the loss of their son killed while fighting in Afghanistan. Family members say 27-year-old Army Sergeant Matthew Blaskowski of Cheboygan was killed this weekend. He was a 1998 graduate of Cheboygan High School. Sgt. Blaskowski enlisted in the National Guard before joining the army. This was his second tour in Afghanistan.
Friends and family call him a true american hero. They say nothing could have kept him from fighting for our freedom. "He was a great leader," says his cousin James Drake. "He was a great friend and a great cousin. We need more people like that in the military."
Two years ago, during his first tour in Afghanistan, Sgt. Blaskowski was wounded in combat. "Matthew got shot once aleady in Afghanistan" James says, "in the back of his leg." He was awarded a purple heart and returned to Northern Michigan to recover, but once his wounds were healed he packed his bags and headed back to serve his country. "He said nana, it's my job, and I like doing it," remembers his Grandmother Shirley Blaskowski. "It scared us, but he wasn't afraid to go back. He was ready to go back and he was going to go back and finish his tour of duty that time."
Last year Matt's family flew to Italy to watch him marry his long-time girlfriend Daniella. The couple built a home in Vicenza, Italy near his base. "I'm going to miss him coming home and being able to play football with him," James says. "Our family would get together at Thanksgiving, and we'd have these family football games."
"He was a wonderful person and so much fun to be around," his grandmother says, "and he made everyone laugh, he was good at making us laugh."
