CHEBOYGAN (AP) -- Volunteers are being sought to help protect lake sturgeon spawning in the northern Lower Peninsula.
The Sturgeon Guarding Program is organized by the nonprofit group Sturgeon for Tomorrow. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment says volunteers are needed to keep watch over the fish, which are vulnerable to poaching.
Each spring, mature lake sturgeon leave Black Lake in Cheboygan County, seeking spawning sites in the Black River. Sturgeon can grow to 8 feet, weigh over 200 pounds and live 150 years. They once were abundant in the Great Lakes region.
The Sturgeon Guarding Program has been in place for more than 10 years. Volunteers can also help monitor fish activity and the number of sturgeon they spot.
