LAKE MICHIGAN -- A 16-year-old teen from Gaylord along with his grandfather were both killed Saturday afternoon after drowning in Lake Michigan.

Troopers from the St. Ignace State Police Post responded to a 9-1-1 call of a double-drowning at the Lake Michigan shoreline in Moran Township of Mackinac County.

Police say the Gaylord teen was standing in the water when he was overcome by a series of large waves. Dragged out to deeper water, police say he was unable to swim back to shore and went under. Witnesses tell police the 16-year-old's grandfather, a 66-year-old also from Gaylord, swam into the water to try to save him but was also overcome by the large waves and was driven under.

Both victims were transported to the Straits Area Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The names of the victims are not being released pending family notification.
