(AP) -- Today marks the opening day of the National Baptist Convention's 104th annual Congress of Christian Education at Cobo Center in Detroit. The Michigan Baptist Fellowship is the host committee for the five-day event, which has brought thousands of people to the Detroit area and is expected to pump millions of dollars into the area's struggling economy.

This year's theme is "The Heavenly Vision: The Mission of the Church." The National Baptist Convention was founded in 1886, and is the oldest and largest African American religious convention. Its Congress of Christian Education typically sponsors more than 500 classes during the annual meeting.
