You might have noticed dozens of shopping carts making their way across the Grandview Parkway in Traverse City Friday afternoon. Well that parade of grocery carts, over flowing with food, is making it a little bit easier for local families in need.
Dozens of shopping carts overflowing with items like boxes of rice, spaghetti, and canned fruit are clicking and clattering their way to a local food pantry in dire need.
“What's in your cart,” asked 7&4 News? “We’ve got mac and cheese, instant rice, spaghetti, lots of oatmeal. Down at the bottom we've got soups and peanut butter this will make great meals," answered Oneupweb employee Duncan White.
"We wanted to do something for the community, in particular Salvation Army. Its that time of year and I wanted to come up with an idea that would really help bond our team… do something good for the people that need it right now," said CEO Lisa Wehr.
The people pushing the shopping carts are employees of Oneupweb in Traverse City. After filling up at Tom's Market employees set off on the mile long trek along the Grandview Parkway making their way to the Open Space. It's here where the goods will be loaded into a truck and straight on to the shelves of the Salvation Army's food pantry. In the carts is an astounding nine thousand dollars worth of food, items that organizers say will go to local families in need and at perhaps one of the worst times. After seeing the need in the community organizers say now is the time to step up and lend a hand.
"Because of the economic times really needs it right now, there's so many families. My whole goal, when I do something to help the communities, make sure that I'm taking the most direct route to the people that need it," said Wehr.
A journey that thanks to the kindness of others will help make getting through the day a little bit easier for hundreds of local families. All the food gathered Friday will help fill the shelves at the Salvation Army's food pantry. Organizers say close to nine thousand dollars worth of food made its way across the Grandview Parkway and straight to Sal's Kitchen.
