GIBRALTAR -- Patrick Pointer of Manistee will unveil his carvings of the doomed great lakes freighter Saturday in Gibraltar. The first carving represents the ship's launch in 1958 in honor of everyone who worked to build the freighter or sailed on it. The second carving is entitled "farewell" and depicts the night the massive ship went down during a storm on Lake Superior. "It's basically a beginning of the story of the Fitzgerald, but farewell doesn't leave us at a place where it's the ending because I believe everybody is some way connected to the Edmund Fitzgerald," explains artist Patrick Pointer. The 50th anniversary celebration will be held Saturday at the Lake Erie Metro Park in Gibraltar.
