CHEBOYGAN CO. -- The City of Cheboygan is one step closer to rezoning the Port of Cheboygan. These changes will likely bring new businesses to the area and jobs in the next few years.

"We really consider ourselves the gateway to the north," Port of Cheboygan project leader Mark Lorenz said.

A gateway that connects Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. A place that is garnering interest from many companies who want to bring business to the area near the port.

"A lot of companies didn't know about Cheboygan, but opening the port will get more traffic and bring in more jobs," Lorenz said.

Monday night, the City of Cheboygan's planning commission will hold a public hearing to discuss zoning changes associated with the Port Area Plan and a creation of a commercial port overlay.  The meeting is scheduled for 7 pm in the City Council chambers.

Both changes will make it easier to add businesses along the port and could make the city a major player in great lakes shipping.

If passed by the planning commission, it will then it will be up for consideration at Tuesday night's Cheboygan city council meeting.

7&4's Nathan Edwards is in Cheboygan today and will have details tonight on how rezoning this port could boost the local economy.
