LANSING (AP) -- Democrats and advocates for the poor are pushing to fully restore a Michigan tax credit for low-income earners.
The working poor used to qualify for a tax credit worth 20 percent of a similar federal tax credit. Now it's 6 percent under changes approved by Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican lawmakers in a 2011 tax overhaul.
The Save Our EITC coalition says the average family eligible for the tax credit is now seeing a $300 annual tax increase. Advocates say the credit reduces poverty and provides an economic stimulus in poorer communities.
A press conference is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Lansing.
The GOP has resisted calls to restore some or all of Michigan's low-income tax credit. But Democrats could insist on it in exchange for supporting Snyder's road-funding plan.
