He played an important role in getting the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians their fishing rights and recognition as a tribe by the U.S. government. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians gained their federal recognition by the U.S. government May 27, 1980.
