Dr. Augusta Rosenthal-Thompson was the first female physician in Traverse City in the late 1800’s. She had her own practice at the age of 25, and worked in Traverse City for 25 years.

Art Duhamel was a member of The Grand Traverse Band of Native Americans in Peshawbestown. He was also a fisherman by trade. He played an important role in getting the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians their fishing rights and recognition as a tribe by the U.S. government. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians gained their federal recognition by the U.S. government May 27, 1980.

Home building companies in the area say there are some new construction trends taking place in northern Michigan, and it's helping the industry during these tough economic times. In fact, a national report says there's a sign that homebuilders are starting to regain confidence as they emerge from the housing bust. Construction of new U.S. homes rose in June to the highest level in seven months.
