Dr. Augusta Rosenthal-Thompson was the first female physician in Traverse City in the late 1800’s. She had her own practice at the age of 25, and worked in Traverse City for 25 years.

Art Duhamel was a member of The Grand Traverse Band of Native Americans in Peshawbestown. He was also a fisherman by trade. He played an important role in getting the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians their fishing rights and recognition as a tribe by the U.S. government. The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians gained their federal recognition by the U.S. government May 27, 1980.

Strong winds and dangerous weather early Monday morning caused a sailboat racing in the 103rd Annual Chicago to Mackinac Sailboat Race to capsize, killing two crew members.

Race to Mackinac officials said the two crew members who died were 51-year-old Skipper Mark Morley and 41-yaer-old Suzanne Bickel, both of Saginaw.
