Even with thousands of songs on my I Pod and in my I Tunes library, I still find myself searching…searching for that perfect song to download. Often times, I don’t even know what I’m looking for. There is too much…and to many good bands, albums and songs to choose from. If you have the same problem, perhaps my blog can help. Each blog, I will feature one album and my favorite three songs from that album. My goal: help you create the perfect playlist. Enjoy

The Playlist: Vol. 5 – Simon and Garfunkel

Artist: Simon and Garfunkel
Album: Bookends
Release Date: April, 1968

Brief History:

Bookends is an album of reflection. A collection of songs that makes you consider the fickle nature of time and the elusiveness of the American Dream.  It has a mood that pairs nicely with the nostalgia of early fall.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel put together some of their brightest work on this album. It’s filled with timeless classics like Mrs. Robinson and America, which are two of my all-time favorite Simon and Garfunkel songs.

The album also has a nice balance of fast and slow. Songs like Bookends and Old Friends contrast nicely with the upbeat tempo of a song like Hazy Shade of Winter.

Fun Fact:

Both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel grew up in Queens. They first cracked the Top 50 with their song Hey, Schoolgirl. They were only 15-years-old.

Top 3:

1. America
2. Mrs. Robinson
3. Old Friends

Honorable Mention:

Honorable Mention goes to the songs Bookends and Hazy Shade of Winter. On any given day, Bookends is in my top 5 Simon and Garfunkel songs. I almost feel that Bookends and Old Friends could have been morphed into one song. Played live, one always leads into the other.

Complete Songs List:

1. Bookends Theme
2. Save the Life of my Child
3. America
4. Overs
5. Voice of Old People
6. Old Friends
7. Bookends Theme
8. Freakin’ It
9. Punky’s Dilemma
10. Mrs. Robinson
11. Hazy Shade of Winter
12. At the Zoo

In their fourth album, aptly titled Led Zeppelin IV, a song was released that seemingly changed Rock n’ Roll. The song was Stairway to Heaven. The sound was Plant and Page. The two wrote the song fireside in an old county house in Hampshire.
