The Playlist: Vol. 2 – Damn the Torpedoes
Even with thousands of songs on my I Pod and in my I Tunes library, I still find myself searching…searching for that perfect song to download. Often times, I don’t even know what I’m looking for. There is too much…and to many good bands, albums and songs to choose from. If you have the same problem, perhaps my blog can help. Each blog, I will feature one album and my favorite three songs from that album. My goal: help you create the perfect playlist. Enjoy.
Brief History:
In 1977, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were yet to make a splash on the American Rock scene. Flash forward two years, and the releases of Damn the Torpedoes would show the world that there was still a little bit of Rock n’ Roll left in the 1970s.
A full decade after Led Zeppelin released their first album; the Heartbreakers were a welcomed new sound. Tom Petty, Mike Campbell (guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums) are capable of creating a sound, that upon first listen, already has the sound of classic rock.
Tom Petty is recognized as one of the great song writers of the late 20th Century. His list of references includes Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Jeff Lynn and Johnny Cash, each a legend that Petty has recorded with.
Fun Fact:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers served as a backup band for Bob Dylan during one of his World Tours.

Honorable Mentions: It is hard to compile a Tom Petty playlist and not include Don’t Do Me Like That. It is definitely an honorable mention. Also, I have to give mention to the song Shadow of a Doubt. It is a great rock song that you won’t catch on the radio.
