The Playlist: Vol. 1 -- Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band

Even with thousands of songs on my I Pod and in my I Tunes library, I still find myself searching…searching for that perfect song to download. Often times, I don’t even know what I’m looking for. There is too much…and to many good bands, albums and songs to choose from. If you have the same problem, perhaps my blog can help. Each blog, I will feature one album and my favorite three songs from that album. My goal: help you create the perfect playlist. Enjoy.

Artist: The Beatles
Album: Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Release: June, 1967

Brief History:

Beatles producer George Martin once said the Beatles entered the Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band Album with a “license to Kill.” What he meant was, the band was untouchable, on top of their game and could seemingly do no wrong in the eyes of their adoring fans. That gave them the freedom to experiment with songs the way no other band had done before them. This freedom, paired with Lennon and McCartney’s ability to weave inspiring thoughts with psychedelic nuances, resulted in a masterpiece.

The Sergeant Peppers album is a must have. It is highly acclaimed to be one of the best Rock and Roll albums of all time. It is also considered responsible for the rebirth of concept Albums in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The album is a pure insight to the Genius of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, as well as a credit to the creativity and talent of George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Fun Fact:

Jimi Hendrix covered the song “Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hears Club Band” live in concert the same Weekend the album was released.

 Top Three Songs:

1. Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hears Club Band
2. A Day in the Life
3. She’s Leaving Home

Honorable Mentions:

While they are not in my top three for this album, you have to give honorable mention to Getting Better and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Getting better is an anthem for many Beatles fans and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds represents the very soul of psychedelic music.

In their fourth album, aptly titled Led Zeppelin IV, a song was released that seemingly changed Rock n’ Roll. The song was Stairway to Heaven. The sound was Plant and Page. The two wrote the song fireside in an old county house in Hampshire.
