TRAVERSE CITY -- Many in the Grand Traverse area can rest easy tonight, knowing they will not go hungry.
The Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners voted tonight five to four to use twenty thousand dollars out of the senior center millage for the Meals on Wheels program.
Voters against the budget change included Maxbauer, who wanted the commission on aging to have the chance to look at their budget (they had not met in the past two weeks), and Gilman, who didn't like the idea of micro-managing other commission's budgets.
Chair, Larry Inman, said that while he would've preferred for the commission of aging to have met and discussed the decision, that we can't take such a known, helpful program away and that we need to find and provide the funding.
Meals on Wheels of Northwest Michigan serves over nine hundred seniors in Grand Traverse County. With this funding, no one will be put on a waiting list.
The Board's budget is similar to last year's (approximately 37 million dollars). For more detailed information on tonight's meeting, please contact the Grand Traverse Governmental Center.
