FRANKFORT -- The City of Frankfort will be constructing a new playground at Mineral Spring Park.

The fundraising campaign to build the playground was spearheaded by fifth-grader Helen Erginkara in 2010. Carter's Kids, a non-profit organization that promotes awareness of fitness and self-esteem for America's youth, also signed to help with the design and construction of the project.

The Carter's Kids program was founded by American TV personality Carter Oosterhouse, originally from Traverse City. It's primary purpose is to increase kid's activity level by building parks and playgrounds throughout the country. They do not provide funding, however, they do provide assistance in design and development of the playground.

Some of the playground equipment was delivered today and is ready for construction to start on Wednesday.

The City of Frankfort has raised $50,000 for Phase One of the project, which consisted of one primary play structure, however the city is hoping for an additional $75,000 to reach their end goal. The new goal will include four smaller accessory play structures that are designed to accommodate younger children. They are also hoping to renovate the picnic pavilion.

The ultimate goal of the playground is to encompass a nautical theme that will honor Frankfort's maritime heritage, and to design parts of the park to mimic landmarks within the community.

If you would like to contribute toward the playground, tax-deductible donations can be made to: City of Frankfort, P.O Box 351, Frankfort, Michigan, 49635.

Volunteers can meet at the site at 10 am on Wednesday.
