MECOSTA CO. -- Ferris State University has cancelled classes due to a widespread power outage affecting thousands of people in Mecosta, Osceola and Lake counties.

In an email to their students, the university says the outage stretches as far north as Reed City, as far east as Evart and as far south as the Stanwood area of Mecosta County.

The outage began around 12:50 pm and nearly 16,000 customers were without power. Some 2,200 customers in the Big Rapids area have since been restored.

Consumer's Energy says the outage is due to a problem with a transmission line. There is no word yet on how long those affected will be without power.
