TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City’s Borders bookstore began its liquidation Friday morning and while customers are taking advantage of the "going out of business" sales, they say it's all very bittersweet.

Folks waited in line to get their last purchases but they say they'd much rather see the bookstore, that's been around since 1996, stay open.

Customers say it's a loss for the community and that they will now have to turn to the internet to do their book shopping.

Borders General Manager Gaylynn Howton says it's tough to say goodbye to this chapter of her life. She says, “I'm in a state of mourning... I’ve cried everyday since we've go the word. The heart felt customers that are coming in, our staff banding together... it has just been a tremendous outpouring. I can't tell you how much the community means to me and to our staff."

27 employees will lose their jobs from the Traverse City Borders store and more than 11,000 companywide will also lose their jobs.
