Fundraiser to help area families

It's the annual Katie Heintz Basketball Tournament, which aims to help Northern Michigan children coping with life-threatening illnesses. The Tournament started as a memorial for Katie - a St. Francis student who was 16 years old when she died of leukemia in 2005.

Players from Katie's School took the court against alumni players from Traverse City Central High School, and a team of community all stars.  All proceeds from the tournament will benefit children at Munson Medical Center who are fighting cancer and blood disorders.

Katie's father, Pat Heintz, says the tournament is a great way to help kids and families find the care they need close to home - so they don't have to travel to downstate hospitals.

Nearly $40,000 has been donated since the start of the tournament and Heintz hopes to raise over $10,000 this year.
