TRAVERSE CITY -- Thousands of people emptied out their medicine cabinets Saturday in the hopes of stopping prescription drug abuse. It's national Drug Take Back Day and law enforcement agencies across northern Michigan joined forces with the Drug Enforcement Agency to collect outdated and unused medications.
The Grand-Traverse Sheriff's office started it's drug-drop-off Saturday morning at 10 am and by noon; they already had collected more than 60 pounds. They say it's really refreshing to see such a high participation level from the community. "If they're no longer safe to use or effective, it's a good reason to get rid of them. Also if they're unsecured; the longer they sit around the more likely they are or the potential is for them to fall into someone's hands and potentially either be abused or sold." said Sheriff's Deputy Mike Makowski.
The Sheriff's office has been participating in Drug Take Back Day for 4 years. But they say today; they collected a record-breaking amount of pills.
