At it's annual dinner, the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce presented its Distinguished Service Award to entrepreneur and humanitarian Terry Berden. Berden, president of Great Lakes Stainless, Inc. of Traverse City was shocked by the announcement, but Laura Oblinger, the Chamber's Chief Operating Officer, says "this year's recipient has given his time and talent beyond what one could imagine."

Berden currently serves as the CEO of four different divisions of the custom fabrication company. But the Chamber points out that "the hours he spends as CEO pale in comparison to the hours he donates to good causes."  When he is not at work, Berden's time has been spent working with prison ministry programs, Goodwill Industries, the Father Fred Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Michigan, and the Women's Resource Center.

The Chamber's Distinguished Service Award is among the region's most enduring community service awards, dating back to 1929.
