Inflammation is a sign of the immune system at work.
President Clinton and his plant-based diet are in the news these days, and people are talking about this "new" and "experimental" treatment for heart disease. But his diet is not new, nor is it really experimental.
Grocery shelves have foods with added calcium, Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins that promise you health. Some people take so many supplements that they are too nauseated to eat. The vast majority of us only need good food, not supplements. Buyers beware!
Expert Answers
Health experts say heart disease can be prevented and cured by diet.  Find out how by joining Harbor LifeStyle Center in a live chat Thursday, January 6 from 5:00-6:00 PM.
Meet the Team
Dr. Huebner, MD
Dr. Huebner obtained his undergraduate degree in Biology and MD from Wayne State University. He then did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital. He completed a Fellowship in Rheumatology at the Detroit Medical Center. He has practiced rheumatology for the last twenty years in Petoskey; first at the Burns Clinic and now at his own private practice, Harbor Arthritis Center. He has authored articles in peer-reviewed journals and has participated in many clinical trials of new arthritis medications. Dr. Huebner is deeply interested in disease prevention and he follows a plant-based diet and exercises regularly. His hobbies include biking, cross country skiing and fly fishing. He is marred to Melanie Manary MD, a Board Certified Internist and Geriatrician. He has two sons, Christian and Timmy.
Jane Denay, CFNP
Jane Joined Harbor Arthritis Center in 2001 after practicing for two years at a pain clinic. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, her experience encompassed the womb to tomb, working at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in obstetrics and medical surgical nursing, teaching nursing at North Central Michigan College and hospice nursing with Hospice of Little Traverse. At Harbor Arthritis Center, she has enjoyed caring for a full complement of rheumatologic disorders with a focus on rheumatoid arthritis. She is a member of the Allied Health Rheumatology Professional Organization, which is a division of the American College of Rheumatology. Through this association, she has had the opportunity to speak nationally on a variety of rheumatologic topics and chair committees to promote the education of her peers. She is married to Cliff Denay and in her free time she is an avid long distance runner, gardener, cook, needle crafter and kayaker. She is a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Petoskey where she teaches middle school and high school Sunday School and serves on the Sunday Soup kitchen team.
Susan Boyko RN, BSN
Sue has been a registered nurse since 1978. In the years since then, she has worked in cardiology, intensive care, emergency, administration, legal nurse consulting and flight nursing. Since 2000, she has worked at Harbor Arthritis Center as a rheumatology nurse, and continues to work in Emergency at Charlevoix Area Hospital. In all of these roles, Sue has worked to improve patient's understanding of their health. As a certified health coach, she is now formalizing that area of expertise by working one-on-one with individuals who want to improve their wellness through life-style changes. Her personal experience with dieting, smoking cessation and exercise allows her to understand her clients wherever they are on their journey to better health. Sue enjoys spending time with her husband, Tim, and their two kids, Jon and Kaitlyn. Jon is a medical corpsman in the U.S. Navy and is stationed in Japan. Kaitlyn is a premed major at Grand Valley State University. Sue also likes reading (mostly nutrition books these days), swimming, walking, cooking and sailing. She calls herself a "recovering dieter" because she is slowly losing weight through positive dietary changes and exercise and does not plan to ever go on a diet again!

Answer

Most insurances do not cover any coaching fees.

Question
What is the relationship between Harbor Arthritis Center and Harbor LifeStyle Center?
Answer

Harbor Arthritis Center is the medical practice of Dr. Charles Huebner, a board certified Rheumatologist and Internist and Jane Denay, CFNP, a Nurse Practitioner with years of experience in pain management and Rheumatology.

Harbor LifeStyle Center is a division of Harbor Arthritis Center. Dr. Huebner has a passion for preventive medicine, healthy eating and those lifestyle strategies that increase health rather than just treating illness. Harbor LifeStyle Center is the natural result of these interests.

Question
When your brochure states that you will work with other medical professionals, what do you mean?
Answer

We will work with your primary care physician to help you reach your goals. There may also be times when a referral to a Physical Therapist, Diabetic Educator, personal trainer, counselor or dietician may be appropriate. These will always be discussed with you and your doctor.
