Question Do I need to purchase a casket if I am going to be cremated without any type of service? Answer No. But the crematory does require that you are brought to them in a combustible container. We offer a minimum container that fulfills their requirements. Question Is embalming required by law? Answer No. Embalming is not required for direct cremation, immediate burial, or donation. However, if you choose to have a funeral or visitation with an open casket, most funeral homes require embalming. An unembalmed body must reach its final disposition within 48 hours of death. Question My mom wants to be cremated, but I want to have a funeral for her. What are my options? Answer Cremation is a means of disposition, just like burial. You can have a funeral and visitation before being cremated. You could choose to purchase a cremation casket, or use our ceremonial casket. Question Do I need to purchase a vault? Answer The use of a vault is not required by law. However, most cemeteries require them to aid in the aesthetics of the cemetery. Vaults support the weight of the ground and protect the casket from damage. Question What are the laws regarding scattering cremated remains? Answer It is unlawful to scatter cremated remains on public properties and inland water bodies. No state law allows them to be scattered on private property without the consent of the property owner. Many national and state parks have permit requirements and, sometimes location limitations for the scattering of those remains. Question Who do I call when a death occurs? Answer When a death occurs at home, and the deceased is not under hospice care, it may be necessary to involve the medical examiner. Police and EMS will determine if that is necessary. First call 911, then us (231) 946-6515. If the deceased is under hospice care, call the hospice to report the death, then they will call us. Question I am Catholic, can I be cremated? Answer Yes. The Catholic faith prefers that the full body of the deceased is present at the funeral, with cremation following the Mass of Christian Burial. However, most Catholic churches will allow cremated remains to be brought into the church for the Mass.
