Early Detection Saves Lives
In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Deerhaven Family Dentistry will be offering free oral cancer screenings on Friday, April 8, 2011. Oral cancer is not a rare disease. Approximately 37,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the US. It kills one person every hour of every day, and over 100 new individuals will be diagnosed with it each day. The good news is that it can often be found early in its development, through a simple, painless, and quick screening.
Who should get screened?
Every adult. Oral cancer can often be caught early, even as a pre-cancer. With early detection, survival rates are high and the side effects are from treatment are at their lowest. Like other screenings you engage in such as cervical, skin, prostate, colon and breast examinations, oral cancer screenings are an effective means of finding cancer at its early, highly curable stages. Make them part of your annual health check-ups.
What are the risk factors?
There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long term historic problem and cause, and the other is through exposure to the HPV16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16), a newly identified etiology, and the same one, which is responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women. The quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population are young, healthy, non-smokers due to the connection to this virus.
Early Indicators:
• Red and/or white discolorations of the soft tissues of the mouth. • Any sore which does not heal within 14 days. • Hoarseness which lasts for a prolonged period of time.
Advanced Indicators:
• A sensation that something is stuck in you throat. • Numbness in the oral region. • Difficulty in moving the jaw or tongue. • Difficulty in swallowing. • Ear pain which occurs on one side only. • A sore under a denture, which even after adjustment of the denture, still does not heal. • A lump or thickening which develops in the mouth or on the neck.
An oral cancer screening should be conducted every year, so take advantage of this free offer and get screened today. Call Beth at 231-929-3606 to make an appointment for your complimentary screening.

The most challenging part of explaining that a tooth needs a root canal is to calm the fears of the patient. A root canal is needed when the nerve inside the tooth dies. That part can be painful. By removing the bad nerve tissue and filling the resulting space, it removes the infection. So here are the basics:
1. A root canal should not hurt and should be a comfortable procedure.
2. For the majority, most root canals can be completed in one visit.
3. Most teeth that have a root canal are successfully retained for a lifetime (90%.) It is essential to restore the tooth once a root canal has been performed, usually with a crown. If not the tooth is susceptible to cracking and breaking.
Question Do I really need to come in every six months? Answer It is very important for continued dental health to schedule regular visits. This is the ideal time frame for detection of any problems. During the 6 month visit the following is done:
1. Oral Cancer Exam: Pain is not an early symptom, and in the curable stages it often goes unnoticed. The most common area affected is the back of the tongue. Treatment works best when the disease has not spread.
2. Periodontal Charting: This is done every 6 months to measure for bone loss due to periodontal disease. This is an infection of the gum and bone that holds the teeth in place.
3. Cleaning: Plaque and tartar is removed. The bacteria in plaque causes the gums to become inflamed and bleed easily. Untreated symptoms lead to formation of pockets between teeth and gums. Ultimately this leads to receeding gums and loss of supporting bone. Prevent plaque and disease by brushing and flossing daily.
4. Updating Radiographs: Full mouth series are taken every 5 years, to examine roots and bones. Bitewings are taken each year, and are needed to detect decay in areas that cannot be seen.
5. The dentist will check the x-rays, the teeth and set up a treatment plan if needed.
6. Toothbrush and Floss: Use a soft toothbrush at least 2x daily and floss daily to prevent decay. Free toothbrush and floss are given to each patient!
Answer They are the same and refer to an infection in the gums and/or supporting bone caused by bacteria. Symptoms include:
1. Gums that bleed when you brush.
2. Gums that are red, swollen or tender.
3. Gums that have pulled away from the teeth.
4. Food retained between the teeth.
5. Gums that secrete pus when pressure is applied.
6. Permanent teeth that are loose or separating.
7. Bad breath.
You can have gum disease for a long time without having symptoms. If caught at an early stage, we can get it under control - but it cannot be cured. It is a lifelong situation which will always require your attention to preserve your smile.
Treatments:
1. Professional scaling and root planing.
2. Meticulous flossing and brushing.
3. Periodontal prophylaxis will be necessary every 3-4 months to remove plaque that has accumulated below gum tissue.
