A native of Springfield, IL, Denny graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Business Administration, and began a 30 year career in the elevator and escalator industry. His work allowed him to experience living in Washington, DC, Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles. After visiting the Traverse City area, where his wife had lived previously, Denny (and wife Kathy) decided to look for a good business to buy so they could live here year-round. Floor Covering Brokers was the result! Denny really enjoys being involved in many local activities including Rotary and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He sits on the board of The Home Builders Association, the Old Town Playhouse, and the YMCA. He most enjoys the technical side of the flooring industry. After managing elevator projects on 70 story plus high rises, and escalator/elevator/moving walk projects like the Denver Airport, he thought flooring would be easy, but has been challenged to learn more than he could have imagined about the complexities of carpet, tile, hardwood, laminate and vinyl. He really appreciates and enjoys working with the deeply talented Floor Covering Brokers team.

After careers as: a Mineral Trust officer with the “original” Traverse City State Bank (5th/3rd Bank); Chairman of Montgomery Elevator Company; volunteer not-for-profit Board Member and event coordinator for Junior Achievement plus Rock Island Arts/Festival of Trees, and stay-at-home mom, Kathy is now co-owner of Floor Covering Brokers, with her husband, Denny! Kathy graduated from St. Mary’s College/Notre Dame with a BA in Philosophy and an Art minor. With responsibility for FCB’s Marketing and Area Rug collection, she’s fallen in love with the flooring industry because “every project is a different puzzle to solve” and “everyone’s always trying to create something that makes them happy”. In her free time (well, actually, no small business owner has free time so she “buys” it from the time she’s supposed to be sleeping), you might find her gardening, walking their dog, reading, cooking, traveling, loving grandchildren or working on any of a zillion creative projects!

This northern Michigan native thrives on all things natural and you see it in her expertise with “green” flooring products and tile design. For Kim, it’s about working with the customer and truly understanding the concept they’re imagining. “Every project is a blank canvas we get to paint. Seeing the customer’s excitement as we finalize decisions and bring together the result is the most rewarding element for me.” When Kim’s not using her 20 years in the flooring industry concocting trendy looks with texture and tile, you’ll find her hiking, cross country skiing, or traveling both domestically and internationally. Cuisine, culture & people are what it’s all about. Her rule when traveling is “No chain restaurants and I must eat or do something to experience the true culture of each destination. I always try local beer or wine, for example.” The mother of four, Kim and her husband Gene spend time building a home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula… and persuading their golden retriever, Luke, not to chew on the corners of the house!
