Meet the Team
Jeanine Rubert, Owner
J9 for short, is co-owner of Pine Hill Nursery and Pine Hill Village Gardens. She has lived and gardened in Northern Michigan for over 30 years. She is the voice of Pine Hill on the radio and frequent speaker at garden clubs. She is alternately known as the Gardening Diva, Goddess of Horticulture, and until the title was stolen by Melissa, Perennial Queen. Jeanine has been a Michigan Certified Nurseryman for over 15 years.
Linda Veliquette, Master Gardener and Michigan Certified Nurseryman
Linda started working at Pine Hill in 1998 and transferred to Village Gardens when we opened in October of 2000. She is our resident sunshine and is always ready with a smile and encouraging word. Linda is a Master Gardener and Michigan Certified Nurseryman. Her specialty is perennial grasses and making up new words for thingys and whatchamacallits. She loves helping customers with their gardening questions, designing container gardens and solving pest problems. Linda is the go to person for just about everything in the nursery and can always solve the problem of where to put what Jeanine just ordered.
Marie Groombridge, Master Gardener and Michigan Certified Nurseryman
Marie has been working at Pine Hill for 3 years and keeps all of our karma’s functioning smoothly. Hers is the smiling face you are most likely to see behind the counter, but we are letting her spread her wings a little more each year. Actually we got tired of hearing, “I didn’t know we had that!” and decided she needed to get out more. Marie is a Master Gardener and Michigan Certified Nurseryman. When she is not behind the counter, you can find her out in the nursery communing with the shrubs and perennials and singing a happy tune.
Melissa Blumerick, Master Gardener, Michigan Certified Nurseryman
The Perennial Queen. (A title she usurped from Jeanine) She loves, loves, loves perennials and can usually be found pulling her custom fitted red wagon stocked with everything she needs to sell, plant, deadhead, fertilize, weed, or divide perennials. Melissa also loves antiquing and finds the coolest containers for her second love, container gardening. Her motto is “Think outside the pot”. Melissa is a Master Gardener, Michigan Certified Nurseryman and 9 year Pine Hill Village Garden veteran.
Ron Belic , Michigan Certified Nurseryman & Master Gardener
Ron is the lone (but not lonely) male in our otherwise all female staff. Tough job but someone has to do it! I think he puts up with us for the chocolate cake, doughnuts and brownies! He is a true jack of all trades and all around Renaissance man. Ron is a graduate of MSU and NMC with degrees in Landscape and Nursery and Associates of Applied Science. He is a Michigan Certified Nurseryman & Master Gardener. He has been designing and installing beautiful landscapes for Pine Hill since 2002.
Diane Albrecht
Diane is our official liquid refreshment provider (a.k.a. she waters the plants) and weather watcher. She has been an organic gardener for 20 years and loves the native plants and the wildlife they attract. You will usually find her at the end of a hose, tending to her many children (of the plant world) or extolling the benefits of gardening with natives of using cottonseed meal to cure all ills in the plant world.
Kim Glew, Master Gardener
Kim is the newest addition to the Pine Hill Family. This is her second season and she has carved out a niche for herself here. Kim is always calm and focused a much needed trait in this business, especially in May! She started out as a good customer and turned into a good staff member. She is a Master Gardener and has been a serious hobbyist for 30 years. She and her husband ran a wholesale greenhouse for 3 years. Kim worked in visual display for 4 years and loves creating visually pleasing garden designs.

Question
Why should I buy plants from you when they are cheaper a the big box store?
Answer

Are they really cheaper? Our competitive shopping says usually not! Additionally, we select strong, healthy plants ideal for our northern Michigan climate; we don’t carry plants that will not thrive in our area. We grow most of them right here in our own greenhouses. Our staff takes good care of those plants while in our care, assuring they receive adequate food, water and ideal growing conditions so that when you take them home, they are healthy rather than stressed. Our experienced, knowledgeable and friendly staff is always on hand to help you select the ideal plants for your unique situation. Plus, we’ll hook you up with plastic trunk liners and help you load them into the car! It’s the personal service and commitment to quality that make shopping at Pine Hill a better value. For a list of the plants we carry go to http://pinehill-nursery.com/plant-categories.php. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, we’ll do our best to get it for you.

Question
I'm new to gardening. Can you help me?
Answer

While we love all of our customers, our favorite has to be the new gardener! All avid gardeners, our staff are always excited and delighted to initiate someone new to the wonderful world of gardening. We also host informational gardening classes, presentations and hands-on workshops throughout the growing season to help you learn even more. For a current schedule go to http://pinehill-nursery.com/index.php. Remember, we are always happy to help you wherever you are as a gardener.

Question
There are so many plants to choose from. Where do I start?
Answer

One place to start is by checking our our staff picks at http://pinehill-nursery.com/staff-picks.php. We are around plants every day and are well versed in their strengths and weaknesses. We all have our favoties; some of which you may never have heard of but are well worth checking out. Still have questions? Stop in and we’ll be glad to help you out. You can get a first-hand look at the plants and get all the additional information you need to make an educated choice.

Question

I’m interested in organic gardening. Can you help me?

Answer

You bet! We were promoting earth-friendly gardening options before they became mainstream, because we feel protecting our unique Northern Michigan ecosystem and watersheds are of the utmost importance. We carry a wide selection of certified organic solutions for every gardening problem you may encounter. Check out our video at http://pinehill-nursery.com/video.php?name=Organic%20Solutions&video=chemicals%23videos2%20 to get familiar with some of the certifications to look for and product lines available. If you still have questions, give us a call. We’re always thrilled when someone wants to learn more about organic gardening!

Question

Do you carry bulk mulch and compost?

Answer

Yes we do. And, we deliver! We have a wide selection of mulches available depending on how it will be used. For most landscape applications we recommend the red-pine bark mulch called Potting Bark. It’s what we use for all of our landscape installations and here at the nursery. It’s a finely milled, beautiful brown mulch which helps build your soil fertility resulting in strong, healthy plants. Our minimum delivery is 5 cubic yards and a truck can tack up to 10 yards maximum  in one trip. Not sure how much you need? Check out our handy mulch calculator at http://pinehill-nursery.com/resource-center.php. Prefer to pick up your mulch? That’s ok too. Know that a full-bed pick up will hold approximately two cubic yards of mulch. We can also load a trailer. In either case, it’s wise to bring a tarp to cover the load. If you want to have your mulch delivered, please be sure to call well in advance of when you need it as our driver is kept very busy early in the season. Fridays are especially busy.

Question

Do you sell Gift Certificates?

Answer

Indeed we do! Gift Certificates are the ideal gift for the favorite gardener in your life. Ideal for birthdays, mother’s or father’s day, or any holiday. They may be used towards plant material, merchandise, and are good at either location at any any amount you choose to apply to your card.  Unlike other gift certificates, ours has no expiration date; if the recipient can’t use it this gardening season, it carries over to the next. Gift certificates are available during the gardening season at both locations and year round by phone. We can complete the entire transaction over the phone and mail the certificate to you or directly to the recipient. Easy peasy!
