The use of native plants is not for all gardeners and that comes to no surprise for me.
Both plant and pet are in need of care & nurturing when first taken home, taking time to acclimate to their new environment.
Owner, Brian Zimmerman (MCN Certified) . Co-Nursery Manager, Jeri Megill (MCN Certified) Jeri has been instrumental in getting the nursery started. She started with Brian in 1998 when his only focus was design and building landscape projects. Her love for plants and her organization skills have helped to expand landscaping into starting a retail nursery. Co-Nursery Manager, Julie Altman (MCN Certified) Julie studied horticulture through the local MSU extension program after a lifetime working on a farm on the east side of the state. It was after Julie joined the staff that we decided to try our hand at retail sales. With Jeri and Julie running the nursery, Brian just tries to stay out of the way. Plant Care Manager, Jerry Konczal (MCN Certified) A graduate of MSU Nursery and Landscape Management. With over 40 years of experience, he has been referred to as our walking encyclopedia. He was the owner of Village Garden in Traverse City and is beginning his 14th year for Brian. I believe Jerry can boast the largest number of spring bulbs of any home in Leelanau County. Avid Gardener, Jim Gardzulis A longtime student of forest ecology. He has been growing and propagating woodland plants for 19 years while working in the nursery trade for the last 9 years. Jim is starting his second year working retail at Four Season Nursery. Avid Gardener, Tom Ford Tom is a naturalist, published illustrator, and an avid gardener. His watercolor paintings and line drawings can be seen at Blue Heron Gallery in Elk Rapids. Tom is a very well-known local bird expert and gives generously of his time educating groups and organizations. This is Tom's second season working for Brian. He enjoys gardening with his wife, Chris, at his home in Traverse City.
Question How can I bring birds into my garden this fall and winter? Answer Birds need to fatten up for the long winter or the migration south. They use the fruits and nuts of native shrubs and trees as well as seeds from native grasses. The key word here is native. They most likely will not be attracted to non-natives, unless they are a non-native bird. Question Will tree wrap keep the mice and voles from girdling my favorite trees? Answer Yes. Mice and voles travel on or just below the surface of the grass or snow and if they bump into your tree and the bark is to their liking, it will be girdled. Be sure to take the wrap to the dirt line. Question When should I turn the irrigation off to my plants? Answer Mid-September is a good time. The plants are shutting down for the season and need to shed any excess water from the foliage and stems before the freezing temperatures. Question What about turning the water off my evergreens in mid-September? Answer Evergreens breath all winter long so they need to pull up moisture from the ground all winter long. Water them as late into the fall if possible, especially if they are newly planted. Question How do I keep deer away from my plants in the winter?
Answer A gun will work…or a barking dog. But if these are not options deer netting works well. You will need to do a thorough job of wrapping the plants or the deer will figure a way to get to them? Question Do you offer any special pricing? Question What do customers need the most help with? Answer Making decision on what plant, what mulch, what fertilizer will work the best for them. Question What’s your busiest time of year?
