Now there is an affordable residential alternative to a nursing home - assisted living communities like Sunnybank. Sunnybank is a community where residents are comprehensively cared for with respect for personal privacy and dignity.

Sunnybank provides the individual attention and assistance that residents need in order to manage on their own - better, longer and with far greater ease than is possible in their own homes.

Assisted living is an attractive alternative for senior adults who have found some of life's daily routines unmanageable. These individuals may need assistance with such tasks as meal preparation, housekeeping, or possibly dressing, bathing or medical reminders, but not the skilled medical care that is provided in nursing homes. What level of care is needed is determined by the resident, family, physician and our staff.

Residents live in individual private apartments with their own possessions, and unlike home health care, we offer opportunities to socialize and a variety of stimulating activities available every day of the week tailored to the residents' interests.

Assisted living focuses on living as independently as one can within a caring residential environment. In many instances, it is a wonderful alternative to living without sufficient care on the one hand and too much medical care on the other.

Ruth Bellissimo and Diane Gillette called upon a combined experience of 30 years in the field of elderly assistance to develop the Sunnybank concept of continuing care. Ruth and Diane directed the operations of a group of 14 assisted living facilities in the Detroit area before moving to northern Michigan in 1996; Diane had added experience as a nursing home administrator. In 1998, after owning and operating a bed and breakfast, they started the construction of the 44 unit facility in Petoskey. The Charlevoix location opened with 49 units in March 2006. Since Diane's passing in July 2009, the Petoskey facility is under the capable leadership of Dee Keil.
