Representatives accept checks to their organization from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians
GRAND TRAVERSE -- The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians distributed $947,754.25 today to 52 local organizations as part of their "2 percent allocation." One hundred and four groups applied to be considered to receive funds from the Tribe, who allocates the money to local units of government twice a year. Under the terms of a consent decree settling Tribes v. Engler, the 2 percent allocation comes directly from gaming revenue. Since the 2 percent allocations began in 1994, the Grand Traverse Band has distributed $29,932,148.59 to hundreds of local organizations. A vote by the Tribal Council determined how much and which organizations received allocated funds. The guidelines considered in selecting groups were based on compensating local units of government for services provided to the tribes, and the impacts associated with the existence of the casino. There was over $4 million in requests from the applicants and the Tribal Council was able to award money to half of the groups who applied. "For us too be able to do this is somewhat of a miracle... I kind of view us as somewhat of a safety net for some of those organizations," Tribal Council Chairman Alvin Pedwaydon said. Pedwaydon gladly handed out checks to group representatives today at the Grand Traverse Resort. Many of those representatives gave quick thank you speeches and emphasized that the money received from the 2 percent allocations either completely fund their services or have helped them grow.
