WHAT IS INSURANCE? Insurance is the shift of risk. I am often asked, usually after an accident and the customer doesn’t have coverage for this or that, “well, then why do I pay insurance?” You pay insurance to shift the risk from you to us, the insurance companies. What then happens is people’s lives change, whether it’s a new driver, loss of a driver, distance to and from work or not driven to work at all.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO REVIEW MY POLICY? Everyone should invest some time, usually 15-20 minutes with their insurance agent to have an annual review. This 15-20 minutes can uncover some potential liability risks that one is not willing or cannot bear on their own. Then, if need be, your agent can give you a call with some suggestions. It takes two to make sure you’re properly covered, you and your agent. I encourage everyone I see or meet to have me review their insurance. Even if I can’t beat the current price they’re paying, I will give some suggestions that they can take back to their agent. It never hurts to have another set of professional eyes reviewing your coverage.
WHY SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT MY COVERAGE? I encourage everyone that has an insurance policy, regardless of type, to ask questions. Get to know your coverage, what it means, who it covers, and how. Pl/Pd is not “just enough to get me on the road and make me legal.” Its coverage’s that you may want to pay attention to their limits. Not all insurance companies are the same and offer the same coverage. Some insurance companies may have Uninsured Motorist, but don’t have Underinsured Motorist, some don’t have Limited Property Damage, also known as Mini torte, if you don’t know, ask. Many times, I come across a couple that only one is “in charge” of the insurance. Then, sadly enough that person that was “in charge” is no longer capable of making decisions anymore, whether it’s due to separation, death, or totally incapacitated. Same is true for young drivers or first time insured’s, ask questions. You don’t know what you’re covered for or not covered for until a claim occurs, that’s why it’s important to ask questions and be “in charge.”
WHO NEEDS LIFE INSURANCE? I believe anyone that’s going to die should have life insurance. That’s right…that’s everyone. Monday, September 13, 2010, CNN reported that 30% of households do not have any life insurance. Term life insurance rates have dropped over 50% in the last 10 years. A person is never too young to have a life insurance policy. I’ve had the arguments of “I don’t want to collect monies on my child’s death.” But what if the child lives? What if they develop an illness that makes them uninsurable later in life? You can change the ownership over to them when the time is right. You want to buy it before you die, of course, but the other reason that goes unforeseen, is to buy it before you are diagnosed with something that makes you uninsurable. If you have a financial responsibility for any reason, you owe the bank for the mortgage or if you owe it to your family, buy life insurance now and if you already have some get it reviewed.
